The Vidyasagar University is a public university located in Midnapore, a district of West Bengal. It was established by the State Government of West Bengal with the aim of promoting education and providing resources for research and development. The university offers different courses of study including science, arts, commerce, literature, and education.
It was founded by the Kalyanamaya (The King's Committee), an organization of the local residents of Midnapore. Kalyanamaya was led by Kalyanamaya founder Bhupesh Chandra Mukherjee. The organization was funded by the State Government of West Bengal and the British Council. The first course was offered in July 1979.
In November 1981, the State Government appointed Professor Bhupesh Chandra Mukherjee as the first Vice Chancellor of the university.
